Some lash materials can affect the way they fit and look on your eyelids!
As a bonus, understanding how and why certain brands choose their preferred lash material will help you through your shopping journey to make the best choice based on your beauty routine and cosmetic needs. This will guide you through how the lash industry markets its products and be aware of any possible misleading information on packaging. Here’s our guide to false eyelash materials.
The most popular lash materials
The main differences between lash materials are natural and synthetic. Choosing between the different lash materials can be challenging based on your needs and beauty routine. The three most popular lashes within the cosmetic industry are faux mink, mink, and silk lashes. Each has its own pros and cons regarding wearability, comfort, material, and durability. Here are some of the main differences between these popular lash materials.
Mink Lashes
Mink lashes are the lashes that started it all; they’re made of fur from a mink, a small animal in the weasel family. Due to the raw animal fibres, mink lashes have become a controversial option amongst animal-friendly cosmetic enthusiasts. Despite its controversial Mink lashes are high-quality due to their natural fur fibre and comfortable, lightweight band. Depending on the style of lashes, mink lashes are very fine and sit very seamlessly against your natural lashes. However, if you're looking for more styles and drama for your lashes, we recommend faux mink as the better option. Try our style in "Posh".
Faux Mink Lashes
Faux mink lashes are the most popular and are considered a premium lash material because they can mimic natural mink lashes. Faux mink lashes are made of a synthetic fibre and known to be durable, long-lasting, and cruelty-free. The synthetic material can vary depending on the brand, but PBT (polybutylene terephthalate) is the most popular. PBT is a synthetic semi-crystalline engineered thermoplastic and is high-quality and hypoallergenic.
PBT is a popular choice amongst cosmetics brands because it offers the opportunity for brands to be creative and design a vast collection of styles due to the flexibility and versatility of the material. This is one of the many reasons Posh Lash Pro uses PBT in our lash collection. Compared to mink lashes, the finishing of the lashes usually has a sheen or semi-matte finish, and due to the durable synthetic material, they are a trendy choice amongst cosmetic brands and enthusiasts.
Silk Lashes
Silk lashes are a newer addition to the cosmetics industry and joined the cosmetics lash lineup to offer a softer and more natural strip lash look compared to faux mink lashes. Silk lashes are sometimes marketed as 100% silk when in fact, they are made of synthetic silk fibre and not raw silk. Depending on the synthetic material, silk lashes are softer, more lightweight, and flexible, providing a more comfortable fit on the eyelid. Due to the synthetic material, silk lashes have a slight sheen to their finishing and are reusable. However, because of the softness of the fibres, they may not hold their shape and curl, making their wearability shorter. Cosmetics enthusiasts may prefer silk to faux mink lashes because of the lighter-weight lash band's more natural look.
